On an overcast morning with fresh snow, I heard the soft but powerful trumpeting of the swans, flying in to land along the Huron River. These heaviest of flying birds in North America (with wingspans up to 8 feet) were nearly hunted to extinction in the early 20th Century, but have since rebounded thanks to many reintroduction programs.
